How much does custom software cost for an SME?

The prices published by French agencies range from €5,000 for a first tool to over €100,000 for a connected platform. For an SME, the median budget is around €20,000. Here is what puts a project at the bottom or the top of these ranges, and how to estimate yours before asking for a quote.

Between €5,000 and €120,000, depending on what you want built

The word "software" covers very different projects. A tool that handles a single process, such as a team's schedule, has nothing in common with a platform open to your customers and connected to all your IT. The agencies that publish their prices divide the market in the same way.

What you want builtPublished ranges
A first tool, for a single process€5,000 to €15,000
Business software, with your existing data brought across and links to your tools€15,000 to €50,000
A connected platform, open to outside users€40,000 to €120,000

Ranges taken from the pricing pages of French agencies and of an agency comparison site, most often without saying whether VAT is included. Pages consulted on 4 October 2026.

Across 184 projects listed by an agency comparison site, the median budget is €30,000 for all clients, and €20,000 for an SME. The published minimums point the same way. A business application starts at €5,000 excl. VAT at an agency in the Gironde, and an internal tool that replaces an Excel file at €15,000 at an agency in Lyon. In Paris, some agencies take no project under €40,000.

If you are comparing with a freelancer, think in days of work. According to a freelance platform's 2026 survey, an experienced developer charges €576 a day on average.

Five things push the price up or down

The number of processes covered

This is the first lever. A first release that handles a single process, put into service and actually used, costs several times less than a platform that covers the whole company.

Bringing your data across

Recovering years of Excel files, cleaning out duplicates and checking what is still correct takes time. Some agencies even leave it out of their first release.

Each piece of software to connect, whether it is accounting, the CRM or the online shop, adds work and cases to test. It is the item most often underestimated in a quote.

Who will use it

A tool used by three people in the office takes less work than an application open to your customers, with accounts, different permissions and a phone interface.

Where the provider works

On the projects listed by the same comparison site, the median budget is €50,000 in the Paris region, compared with €15,000 in the rest of France.

After delivery, allow 15 to 20% a year

Software does not stop on the day it goes into service. It has to be hosted, kept up to date with security patches, fixed when something breaks and adapted when the way you work changes. Annual maintenance is generally estimated at 15 to 20% of the development cost, so €3,000 to €4,000 a year for a €20,000 tool.

The monthly fees published for looking after automations range from €300 to €2,500, not counting licence fees for the tools used. Before you sign, ask who will run the tool once it is delivered, and at what price. With us, it is the team that built it.

Estimating your project before asking for a quote

  1. Describe the process as it is done today. Who does what, with which files, at what point. A precise quote starts from there.
  2. Count the time it takes you. The hours spent each week, multiplied by the hourly cost of the people who do it, tell you what you can reasonably invest.
  3. List the software the tool will need to read from or feed. That is often where the gap between two quotes hides.
  4. Start with a single process. A first release put into service shows you what the tool really changes, before you commit to the rest.

At Hacot & Co, we started with the servicing schedule. Development began in March 2026, and the application has been in service since 8 July, delivered in stages. Read the case study
